Running RGC and Finding the Target Audience

might as well start off with the topic that won’t get me cancelled. i’ll write about pedophiles some other time, anonymous commenter.

rhythm game club is my baby; i’ll always love it and care for it, but who it interacts with and becomes is partially out of my control. yes, i could have a chokehold on its childhood and be a tiger parent and perfectly curate a membership that i would be proud of, but that hasn’t happened because

1. no one likes strict parents. not letting people join because they’re this or they’re that and blocking them from finding their potential friends isn’t something i should have authority over. plus, i don’t want to run the risk of abusing that power to just deny whoever the hell i want just because i don’t like them, or even if no one in the club likes them. it’s still not justified

2. i’m too fucking lazy

someone asked me the other day (while on the topic of circumcision) if i would cut anyone from rgc, and i of course said yes. here’s why.

MENTAL HEALTH

some people just aren’t in the right headspace to be in the club. this is the probably the most justified reason because there’s little room for nuance. if you have serious stuff going on outside of your life and come to rgc to dump, you’re bringing down the vibe and causing concern. especially if we don’t know you very well. we had a situation last year where, if you know you know. the club is not an open mic. we are here to have fun, make friends, and not listen to how your poop didn’t go down the first flush because it was too big.

CRINGE

lots of room for discussion and debate, but still generally agreeable. the club can probably come to a general consensus on who in the club passes and fails the vibe check. funnily enough, a lot of the time it’s correlated to, but not caused by, bad mental health.

UNFUNNY

absolutely not justified lmao, this one’s just for me

“okay, so who is the target audience?” well to be honest, it’s people like you. funny, self aware, and  a reasonable level of cringe (you can’t escape being cringe in high school). that is who i fuck with and that is who i want to be in rgc. in A tier, its the people who sit in the back of the room playing project sekai with their respective friend group. that is AWESOME. i don’t mind friends being with friends, but i do hope that the friend groups can combine into one in later years, although that’s wishful thinking. and in F tier, it’s the people who try to be in our friend group. you gotta make friends your own age, kiddo.

one last thing. personally, i prefer members who are a little nerdy without being a full on weeb. i don't want people who are completely mainstream and unrelatable and i definitely don’t want people who create the club’s image of being a bunch of gooners or losers.  for me, threading that needle is what rgc should be. i’m don’t want to sound elitist, like i’m less nerdy that others (i mean, my room is a gooner’s paradise.) but i do get self conscious about running this club sometimes and how it might affect my image. yes, it’s a little selfish. yes, i’m a little sensitive about it. but the club is my kid and i want to be proud of it.

i would talk about the original target audience and my initial vision for the club, but im saving that for my end of the year speech. sorry that the first real blog post is a little long and all over the place, hopefully the next ones will be shorter and more concise. let me know what you guys think about rgc, its members, and what its target audience should be.
